Bead Calculator

Calculate bead counts, strand lengths, pattern repeats, and material costs for jewelry and craft projects. Plan bead layouts with size and spacing tools.

About the Bead Calculator

The Bead Calculator helps jewelry makers and craft enthusiasts determine exactly how many beads they need for any project. Whether you're making bracelets, necklaces, earrings, or decorative items, this tool calculates bead counts, strand lengths, pattern repeats, and material costs.

Beading projects require precise planning. Too few beads and your piece is too short; too many and you waste expensive materials. Different bead sizes, spacers, and clasp allowances all affect the final count. This calculator handles all the math — enter your desired finished length, bead diameter, and spacing to get an exact count with material cost estimates.

The tool supports common bead sizes from tiny seed beads (2mm) to large focal beads (20mm+), accounts for knots between beads, and calculates how many strands you need to purchase. Use the pattern repeat feature to plan complex multi-bead designs. That keeps repeat counts and final strand length aligned before you start stringing.

Why Use This Bead Calculator?

Use this calculator when you need to estimate bead counts before buying materials, price out a custom piece, or check whether a strand will finish at the length you want. It is also helpful for repeating patterns where the total count needs to land on a clean multiple. That makes pattern planning less trial-and-error and more predictable.

How to Use This Calculator

  1. Enter the desired finished length of your bead strand.
  2. Enter the bead diameter in millimeters.
  3. Set spacing between beads (0mm for tight stringing, 1-3mm for knotted).
  4. Account for clasp length if applicable.
  5. Use presets for standard bracelet and necklace lengths.
  6. Enter cost per bead or per strand to estimate total materials cost.
  7. For patterns, enter the number of bead types in the repeat.

Formula

Stringing Length = Finished Length - Clasp Length. Beads Needed = Stringing Length / (Bead Diameter + Spacing). Pattern Repeats = Total Beads / Beads Per Pattern. Strand Count = Total Beads / Beads Per Strand. Total Cost = Beads Needed × Cost Per Bead.

Example Calculation

Result: 74 beads needed

Stringing length = 18" × 25.4 - 15mm clasp = 442.2mm. Beads = 442.2 / 6 = 73.7, so you would typically round up to 74 beads to complete the strand.

Tips & Best Practices

Bead Size Reference

Beads are measured in millimeters (diameter). Common sizes and their typical uses: 2-3mm (seed beads, spacers, woven designs), 4mm (delicate necklaces, multi-strand designs), 6mm (standard bead stringing), 8mm (bold necklaces, bracelets), 10-12mm (statement pieces, focal beads), 14mm+ (large focal or accent beads).

Seed beads use the "aught" system: 15/0 (1.3mm), 11/0 (1.8mm), 8/0 (3mm), 6/0 (3.7mm). The larger the aught number, the smaller the bead — a historical sizing convention.

Stringing Materials

Thread (Nymo, FireLine): Best for seed bead weaving and light bead stringing. Sizes range from OO (thinnest) to D (thickest). FireLine is braided and stronger than nylon for its diameter.

Beading wire (Soft Flex, Beadalon): Multi-strand steel cable coated in nylon. Available in 7, 19, 21, and 49 strand counts — more strands means more flexible. Standard .018" or .019" works for most projects.

Elastic cord: Used for stretch bracelets. Available in 0.5mm to 1mm diameters. Thicker is more durable but may not fit smaller bead holes.

Cost Planning

Gemstone beads vary dramatically in price. Common stones (agate, jasper) run $3-8 per strand. Semi-precious (amethyst, citrine) cost $8-20. Fine stones (tourmaline, sapphire) can be $50-500+ per strand. Glass and crystal beads offer beautiful options at lower cost points. Calculate per-bead cost by dividing strand price by the bead count per strand.

Frequently Asked Questions

How many beads do I need for a 7-inch bracelet?

Depends on bead size. 4mm beads: ~42 beads. 6mm: ~28 beads. 8mm: ~21 beads. 10mm: ~17 beads. Subtract 10-15mm for the clasp. Stretch bracelets need fewer since there's no clasp.

What is the standard necklace length?

Choker: 14-16". Princess: 17-19". Matinee: 20-24". Opera: 28-36". Rope: 40"+. The most common length is 18" (princess), which falls just below the collarbone.

How do I account for knots between beads?

Pearl knotting adds about 1-2mm per knot. For a strand with knots between every bead, add the knot size to each bead's effective diameter. 6mm beads with 1.5mm knots: effective size = 7.5mm per bead unit.

How many beads are on a standard strand?

Standard temporary strands are usually 15-16 inches (38-40cm). The bead count per strand depends on size: 2mm ≈ 190 beads, 4mm ≈ 95, 6mm ≈ 63, 8mm ≈ 48, 10mm ≈ 38, 12mm ≈ 32.

What extra cord length do I need?

Add 4-6 inches beyond the finished length for finishing (crimps, knots, bead tips). For knotted designs, add 25-30% extra cord since knots consume length. For multi-strand designs, add even more.

How do I calculate seed bead coverage?

Seed beads are measured in "aught" sizes (11/0, 8/0, etc.). 11/0 seed beads are ≈1.8mm wide and fit about 14 per inch. 8/0 beads are ≈3mm and fit about 8 per inch. Multiply beads-per-inch by your length.
