Each 12”×12” sheet covers 1 sq ft. With 15% waste: 12 × 1.15 = 13.8 sq ft. Sheets = ⌈13.8 / 1⌉ = 14 sheets. At 10 per box: ⌈14 / 10⌉ = 2 boxes.
Square (1” or 2”) is the most common and versatile. Hexagon (1” or 2”) offers a retro or modern geometric look. Penny round (3/4” circles) is classic for vintage bathrooms. Herringbone and chevron patterns create dynamic movement. Arabesque and lantern shapes add Moroccan-inspired flair.
Ceramic mosaics are affordable and available in every color. Porcelain mosaics are denser and better for floors. Glass mosaics reflect light beautifully for backsplashes. Natural stone mosaics (marble, travertine) add luxury but require sealing. Metal accent mosaics create contemporary mixed-material designs.
Shower and pool mosaics need waterproof substrate, modified thinset, and epoxy grout. The slope on shower floors must be 1/4” per foot toward the drain. Ensure continuity of the waterproof membrane behind and between mosaic sheets.
Use mosaic accent bands to frame larger field tiles. Create a focal point on one shower wall or behind a cooktop. Mix two or three complementary mosaic colors for visual interest. Balance busy mosaic patterns with simpler surrounding tiles.
2”×2” or smaller (penny round, 1” hex) are best for shower floors. The small size allows the tiles to follow the slope toward the drain without lippage.
Most mosaic sheets are 12”×12”, covering about 1 sq ft including grout lines. Larger sheets (12”×18” or 12”×24”) are also available for some patterns.
Unsanded grout for grout lines 1/8” or less (most mosaics). Epoxy grout is recommended for wet areas and anywhere stain resistance is important. The many grout lines in mosaics make epoxy's durability especially valuable.
The mesh backing simplifies installation, but mosaics are more time-consuming than large tiles. Alignment of sheets, trimming around fixtures, and grouting many joints all add time.
Use 10–15% waste for most projects. Shower niches, curved walls, and intricate shapes may need 15–20%. Simple rectangular walls can use 10%.
For dry areas only. In wet areas (showers, tub surrounds), mosaic tiles must go on cement board, KERDI membrane, or another waterproof substrate. Never install in wet areas on regular drywall.
